Gaula 2012 — 1–9 June — Kåsen beat

This year Ole and I decided to try the Kåsen beat, situated about 1 km downstream from Borten og Losen. In the photo above you can see me with a salmon on the hook — what a great feeling. (See also fishing info from Kåsen beat in 2015.)

Fishing is available on both banks, but the western bank is the most productive at 200–350 m³. I compiled a record of virtually all salmon caught between 1 and 9 June 2012 and plotted them on an overview map. It is remarkable how all the fish were caught in such a small physical area during this week.

During the first week of June, five of us were fishing: Ole and I, two from Lillehammer, and one from Trondheim, plus a couple of locals who popped by after work. Just the right number of anglers for this beat — no crowding, only smiles and good spirits. Fishing should always be fun!

One of the many fine salmon we caught. All fish struck deep at the bottom. It rained heavily during the first few days and the Gaula turned brown and murky. Only towards the end of the week did it begin to clear, and that is when we started seeing salmon at the surface. Ole had just spotted this fish — five minutes later it was on the hook. We each took two salmon home; the rest were released.

By the end of the week we had landed 8 salmon in total. We took 4 home — providing many fine dinners over the coming months.

A truly wonderful week with plenty of action — salmon between 5 and up to 13 kg. Lots of rain, lots of sunshine, days of frustration and days of amazing experiences: pounding hearts, salmon and red wine with dinner. All fish were caught on either worm or deep-running lures in the murky water. — Carl
